I think it’s obvious that king cake is A Pretty Big Deal in the New Orleans area. I’ve seen them loaded with babies, shoes and other trinkets, but never keys, let alone “Keys To The Court” — the Windsor Court, that is. I received this press release last week, but there is still time to snag these perfectly giftable cakes. To make things more interesting, there is now more than one winning king cake that could be delivered to a lucky recipient.

In honor of Mardi Gras 2010, the Windsor Court Hotel in downtown New Orleans is offering a limited supply of 100 Windsor Court Miniature King Cakes. Prepared by the pastry chef of the hotel’s award-winning Grill Room Restaurant, Shun Li, these delicious, four-inch cakes will feature traditional colors and a cream-cheese filling, accompanied by a set of special Windsor Court Mardi Gras beads. Several of the 100 cakes will contain a set of “Keys to the Court” that will allow the recipients to enjoy a complimentary two-night, weekend stay at the Windsor Court and dinner for two in The Grill Room.

The 2010 Windsor Court Miniature King Cakes can be ordered by calling The Grill Room at 504-522-1994. Cakes are $20 apiece, including shipping and handling. Orders will begin shipping this week.

The Avenue Pub is tapping a cask of NOLA Brewing Company‘s NOLA Blonde Ale this Wednesday, December 30th at 7pm. According to Polly Watts, The Avenue Pub’s owner, the NOLA Blonde Ale “is fresh hopped with Citra hops. Citra is a new lay available on the market and the primary hops used in Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo.” The brew will be poured at $5.50 a pint.

"The Blonde Ale is a medium-bodied traditional American blonde ale, golden in color with floral and citrus hop aromas."

Show Me Your Tidbits | “Daytime Drinking” Now Showing At Zeitgeist Multi-disciplinary Arts Center

I was recently contacted by the people from Eleven Arts, Inc., a film distribution company based in Los Angeles that brings Asian cinema to the States and International films to Asia. Being the huge film buff that I am, I was more than happy to help them promote one of their latest South Korean imports that is currently showing at Zeitgeist Multi-disciplinary Arts Center, “Daytime Drinking”.

“Daytime Drinking” was described to me as the Korean “Sideways” meets “Superbad”. I haven’t seen the film yet, but hope to catch it at Zeitgeist, where it will run through December 20th. Zeitgeist is showcasing “Daytime Drinking” as a Happy Hour Matinee with drink specials, so get your early evening drink on and support the New Orleans art and cinema community.

Be certain to watch the trailer and check out the Korean Drinking FAQ on the official U.S. site. I especially love Rule #3: Never decline the first glass. “Daytime Drinking” will also be available on DVD on January 26, 2010.

I will be presenting some of the latest bites of information in the New Orleans area restaurant and dining scene, and highlighting some of the week’s upcoming events. Our first Tidbit is a recipe from The Rib Room‘s Chef Anthony Spizale. For visitors or those new to New Orleans, The Rib Room is housed in the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel in the French Quarter. His braised short ribs with satsuma gremolata is featured on this year’s four-course Reveillon menu. I love elegant hotel restaurants that remain warm and inviting, and The Rib Room is no exception.
